Literature Text

Well, I used to have money
I used to have love
I had marble columns right beside my door
Now all I've got is the cypress up above

          Sternwheel keep on rollin'
          Playing roulette with the tide
I think my number's coming up
... I'm breakin' even for the night

I've always had a taste for gold
Mama said the glitter caught her baby's eye
I've been chasin' wealth for half my life
Like a comet streakin' cross the sky

When I think of all that I've lost and won
And with her I think I might
Play the Jack of Hearts again
... I'm breakin' even for the night

The mayor, he finally caught me
Playin' with loaded dice
Now he's got me twistin' at the end of this rope
But I held his daughter just the other night

There's a baby in the nursery
And I swear he's got my eyes
But this tombstone's cold and lonely
... I'm breakin' even for the night

There are winners and losers
And I'm somewhere in between
I'm just walking here between Heaven and Hell
Tell me Mister, can you see me?

These bones they keep on rollin'
But they keep on coming up snake eyes
And I remember hair so golden
... I'm breakin' even for the night
This is kind of a bluegrassy song. It was written on assignment, which was "write a song about a gambler who always breaks even." So here you are.

I've got a rough mp3 of this song (and some of the others I've posted) in case you're interested in the melody. Just let me know.
